NEW DELHI — A mother who gave up her life to have a baby in an open toilet stall at her home in a New Delhi suburb has died, police said.
An inquiry has been ordered into the death of 36-year-old Rakesh Sharma, who had recently moved to the district.
Police said Sharma had taken a new-born baby to the home of his wife in Gurgaon, about 20 kilometers (12 miles) from New Delhi, on Thursday.
He was rushed to a hospital where he died.
Police sources said the newborn boy died of internal bleeding.
The body was handed over to the maternal and child welfare authorities.
Sharma was a doctor, who lived in the same block as his wife, said Gurgaonian police superintendent Subhash Bhargava.
The couple were married for nearly 15 years and had three children, he said.
Police were investigating the circumstances surrounding the death, he added.
