He was later found dead at a hospital.

Police said Merash was shot by a special weapons unit.

He had two weapons and a “machete” at his home, police said.

“We didn’t know what was happening.

We didn’t see him,” a witness told Le Parisien newspaper.

The police chief, Michel Cadot, said he had no information on the motive for the shooting.

The mayor of the French city of Nice, Laurent Fabius, said on Twitter that he was “shocked” by the shooting and that the shooting was “incompatible with all of the values that we hold”.

He called on residents to stay home.

The US Embassy in Paris said it was aware of the shooting but had no further information to share at this time.
